Thinking about a Scottish Highlands spring escape? Yes please! 🌿

Fancy a few days soaking up the wild beauty, coastal charm, and hidden gems of the North East of Sutherland? Whether you're dreaming of castle-hopping, waterfall-chasing, beach-wandering, or curling up with a dram and a view — we’ve got just the itinerary for you.

Base yourself at Valhalla, our warm and welcoming self-catering accommodation in Helmsdale, and explore everything the Highlands has to offer. This 4-day journey blends iconic sights with off-the-beaten-path magic, giving you the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

🌊 Day 1: Hello Helmsdale & Coastal Wanders

Ease into your Highland adventure by discovering Helmsdale — a charming coastal village rich with history and natural beauty.

  • Morning: Start with a slow wander along the harbour and river, where you might spot seals basking on the rocks. Then head to the Timespan Museum & Heritage Centre to dive into Helmsdale’s past — from the Highland Clearances to the Gold Rush.

  • Lunch: Enjoy fresh seafood at Thyme & Plaice, a beloved local bistro serving up hearty Highland dishes with a coastal twist.

  • Afternoon: Drive 25 minutes north to Dunrobin Castle — one of Scotland’s most romantic castles. Marvel at its fairytale turrets, explore the gardens, and watch a dramatic falconry display.

  • Evening: On the way back, detour to Loth or Brora Beach. These are stunning spots for a golden-hour walk. Cap off your day with a cosy dinner and a glass of wine back at Valhalla, or treat yourself to traditional pub fare in the village.

Hidden Gem: Take the lesser-known path up River Helmsdale to a peaceful stretch of riverbank perfect for quiet reflection.

🌲 Day 2: Waterfalls, Wildlife & Wide Open Spaces

The Highlands are made for wandering — and today is all about nature in all its majestic forms.

  • Morning: Drive to the Falls of Shin, about an hour away. This stunning waterfall is a joy in any season, and there's a lovely café nearby for a morning coffee.

  • Midday: Continue on to Loch Shin for a scenic picnic. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, red squirrels, and eagles. Then head back east and stop at Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve — an oasis of salt marsh, mudflats, and osprey sightings.

  • Afternoon: Visit the haunting clifftop ruins of Badbea, a former clearance village where the wind whispers stories of resilience. Alternatively, take a walk through the Strath of Kildonan, where the landscape stretches into the distance like something from a painting.

Hidden Gem: Journey along the Helmsdale Clearance Trail for a deeper connection to local history.

🏝️ Day 3: NC500 Bucket List Day!

Today, take in some of the North Coast 500's most breathtaking stops as you head further north.

  • Morning: Set off early to climb the dramatic Whaligoe Steps, 330 ancient steps cut into a cliffside leading to a once-thriving fishing harbour. It’s steep but worth it!

  • Late Morning: Visit Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, a haunting cliff-top ruin with panoramic sea views.

  • Lunch: Pack a picnic or grab something en route and head to the Duncansby Stacks, towering sea stacks where puffins often nest during spring.

  • Afternoon: Stand at Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain, and soak in the raw, windswept energy of the sea meeting the sky.

  • Evening: Head back to Helmsdale, heart full and camera roll overflowing. Stop at La Mirage for fish & chips that are the stuff of local legend.

Hidden Gem: If time allows, pop into John O’Groats Brewery Taproom for a locally brewed Highland pint.

☕ Day 4: Chill Mode Activated

Let your final day be all about slowing down and savouring the Highlands.

  • Morning: Drive south to River Bothy in Berriedale for riverside coffee and delicious pastries. Tucked into the glen, this café is a local favourite and a serene start to your morning.

  • Midday: Stretch your legs on the Dunbeath Heritage Trail — a gentle loop through wooded glens and past historic sites. Learn about the area's ties to author Neil M. Gunn and admire the lush, quiet beauty.

  • Lunch: Indulge in a relaxing lunch at The Marine Hotel in Brora, known for its friendly service and freshly cooked meals.

  • Afternoon: Fancy a dip in nature? Head to Loch Brora for a peaceful paddle or bring a book and soak in the stillness. Golfers might enjoy a round at Brora Golf Club, where the greens are shared with grazing sheep.

  • Evening: Return to Valhalla for a final Highland toast. Pour yourself a dram, curl up by the fire, and relive your favourite moments of the trip.

Hidden Gem: Pick up a handcrafted souvenir from Gifted Helmsdale, just across the Helmsdale Bridge.
