4 Day Winter Mini Break Itinerary for East Coast of Sutherland & Caithness



❄️😍There is something quite magical about Scotland in winter and there are plenty of things to do in low season. Winter brings together the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and cosy indoor activities and this 4 day itinerary offers a suggestion of things to do and places to go in the area:

Day 1 Helmsdale

🦈🖼️ Arrival in Helmsdale / Take a stroll along to the historic fishing village harbour, explore the local village landmarks, enjoy a meal at one of the local cafes, visit Timespan Museum & Art Centre to delve into the local history and arts (Jan to Mar open Sat & Sun 10am to 3pm only) and then relax and unwind at Valhalla.


 Day 2 Brora

🏌️🩱Visit the nearby village of Brora and its beautiful beach and if you are brave enough, and weather permits, maybe try wild swimming or take in a round of golf at arguably one of the finest golf courses in the Highlands at Brora Golf Club. In the afternoon experience a whisky tour at Brora's local Clynelish Distillery and then return to Helmsdale for a cosy evening at Valhalla.

Day 3 - NC500

❄️🗻Take a drive north along the North Coast 500 coastline, appreciating the wild winter Caithness landscape, stop at Berriedale village to explore the charming harbour and swing bridge experience and wrap up with fish and chips in Helmsdale.




 Day 4: Golspie & Dunrobin

☕Explore the village of Golspie, vist the local shops, and enjoy coffee or lunch at a cafe, then take the shore path from Golspie to Dunrobin for stunning views of the fairytale Dunrobin Castle (the Castle is closed Jan to March, but the coastal walk is accessible).

Please note prices are subject to availability and based on 8 guests sharing, however if you have reduced guest numbers please let us know at time of enquiry and we can quote accordingly. Returning guests have preferred rates which are available on request.


Due to the distance and operational logistics for Valhalla we only offer a minimum of a 4 nights during low season.
